“Some secrets stay silent. Others speak.”

A young investigative journalist in Cairo discovers a worn folder of typewritten reports tying her favourite uncle — now a respected newspaper publisher — to a chain of disappearances in the years leading up to the 2011 revolution. As the country reorganises itself around her in the heat of late summer, she must decide whether to publish what she knows or protect a family that has carried her since her father died. The longer she holds the folder, the more it begins to read like a letter addressed to her.

An essential post-revolution film

by arabic_film_archive

Salloum directs with patience and precision. Nadia El-Hamamsy holds the centre of every frame she occupies. The film never lets you forget the heat of that summer or the cost of what it is asking of its protagonist.

8.0

Patient and devastating

by festival_circuit

Picked it up at Marrakech and have been recommending it ever since. The script earns every quiet decision. The final scene in the newsroom corridor will be studied for years.

9.0

A confident, necessary debut

by world_cinema_devotee

First features rarely arrive this fully formed. Salloum understands that political cinema does its best work at the kitchen table, not the protest. Every meal Nour shares with her uncle is its own slow tightening.

6.0

Slow but rewarding

by casual_viewer

The first hour is patience-testing if you do not know the political backdrop. Once the second half clicks into place I was completely with it. Worth the demand it makes.

Asks the questions the news won't

by cairo_critic

What Egyptian cinema has been quietly doing in the post-revolution decade is some of the best work in world cinema and almost no one outside the festival circuit is paying attention. Salloum belongs in that conversation.
