“O cobre nunca enferruja. Mas pesa.”

Across three decades in a Rio de Janeiro hillside neighborhood, three generations of one family are shaped and reshaped by the copper-wire smuggling trade that gives their patriarch his nickname. As his teenage grandson is drawn toward the same work, his elderly mother and his middle-aged daughter try to break a pattern they no longer believe can be broken. A federal investigator who has known the family for twenty years closes in.

A masterpiece of contemporary Brazilian cinema

by cinema_brasileiro

Carvalho's three-generation structure works because every era feels lived-in. Bruno Damasceno gives one of the great Brazilian performances of the century — vain, tender, dangerous, all at once. Devastating ending.

Slow-burn epic

by world_cinema_devotee

Two hours and twelve minutes that earn their length. The cinematography of the hillside neighborhood across three decades is staggering. The film does not romanticize and does not condemn; it observes.

8.0

Excellent ensemble work

by matinee_archive

Every supporting performance is specific and lived. Marina Dantas as the matriarch deserved every award. The script's refusal to provide easy moral handholds is its great strength.

7.0

Demanding but rewarding

by casual_classics

Subtitled, slow, three-generation structure — it's a film that asks for attention and gives it back. The first hour is the hardest; once you're in, you're in.

6.0

More family drama than crime

by true_crime_fan

Marketed as a crime epic, it's really a family chronicle with crime as setting. That isn't a complaint exactly — just calibrate expectations. The investigator subplot felt underdeveloped.
