“Some land remembers what its owners forget.”
A Johannesburg journalist returns to the Karoo farm where her grandmother worked as a domestic for forty years, to confront the family that employed her with a document her grandmother left behind. The aging Afrikaner widower who reads it has been waiting decades for the conversation it forces. Across a week of careful meals, longer walks, and one storm that knocks out the power, two histories of the same kitchen begin to argue with each other.

User Reviews
5 reviewsA landmark South African film
by world_cinema_devotee
Mbeki's first feature lands with the weight of a director who has been thinking about every shot for years. The Karoo landscape becomes a moral character. Khanyi Sokhulu's performance is contained fury and learned grace at once.
Devastatingly precise
by festival_circuit
Won the audience award at three festivals and deserved each one. The kitchen-table scenes between Sokhulu and van Reenen are master classes in how to film two people listening to each other slowly losing footing.
Patient and necessary
by drama_lover
Demands attention and rewards it. Some of the political context will be denser for non-South-African viewers but the human story carries across without effort.
Important but heavy-handed in places
by skeptical_critic
The film knows it is saying important things and occasionally lets you know it knows. The best scenes — and there are many — let the silence speak. The worst ones lecture.
They got the wind right
by karoo_lifer
Films set in the Karoo usually feel like they were shot by people who flew in for a week. This one feels like it was shot by people who slept there. The light, the dust, the silence between cicadas — all of it.
