In a Milan villa heavy with antique mirrors, three women associated with a single dealer in rare gilt-framed glass have died within a month — each found at her own dressing table, throat opened by a shard from her own mirror. A Roman inspector summoned north finds the household guarding more than one secret. The mirrors keep showing him things that were never there.

Fantelli isn't the household name some of his peers became but this film makes the case that he should have been. The mirror imagery is consistently inventive and the lavender-and-blood color palette is gorgeous.
Beautiful, bloody, slightly silly

Story makes about seventy percent sense and that's fine — the genre runs on atmosphere and Fantelli has it in abundance. The villa setting is a third character.
Gorgeous but dated

Restored print looks like a stained-glass window. The acting and dialogue are pure mid-60s European pulp. Take it on those terms and you'll have a good time.
Style over coherence

Visually fantastic but the plot creaks audibly. The killer's identity hinges on a coincidence the film doesn't earn. Still worth a watch for the camera work alone.
Patient predecessor

Predates the giallo boom proper and you can see directors who came after stealing from it shot for shot. The dressing-table set piece in the second act is iconic.
