“Whatever lives in the pines does not need the door.”

When a hunting accident strands three friends deep in a remote stretch of Vermont woods, they take shelter in an abandoned logging camp until the snow lets up. Strange tracks circle their cabin each night and the pine trees around the clearing seem to lean a little closer by morning. By the second dawn, one of them has begun to behave differently — speaking only after dark, refusing to eat, watching the treeline with something that isn't fear.

A patient, suffocating gem

by midnight_movie_club

Brennan refuses to give you a single jump scare and the film is so much scarier for it. The thing in the woods is barely ever shown and that's the whole point. Anne Trumbull's performance unravels in real time and I couldn't look away.

8.0

Folk horror before the term existed

by spookseason_steve

Predates the modern folk-horror revival by decades and frankly does it better than most. The score is barely there, the violence is offscreen, and yet I had to turn the lights on after. Vermont has never looked more wrong.

5.0

Atmosphere over story

by casual_horror_fan

Mood for days, plot for about twenty minutes. I get what it's going for but I wanted a little more to actually happen. The ending is genuinely unsettling, I'll give it that.

4.0

Where are the kill scenes?

by slasher_purist

Marketed in 1981 as a horror movie and it spends an hour and a half on people staring at trees. If you like that, fine. I wanted what the poster promised.

8.0

Anne Trumbull's career-best

by quiet_screams

She does so much with so little — a held breath, a slight smile at the wrong moment. The film around her is good. She is great. The diner scene is one of the most quietly terrifying moments in 80s American horror.
