“The seas obeyed his fathers. The throne would obey him.”

Across two and a half decades of intrigue, exile, and reconquest, an exiled Phoenician prince makes his return to the throne of the merchant city of Tyre — only to discover that the empire his father built on silver and cedar has been rebuilt by his uncle on something far older and stranger. A sweeping, three-hour Hollywood biblical-era epic, complete with intermission, in the grand DeMille tradition.

A grand old picture

by classics_only

Three hours, an intermission, and one of the great matte-painting setups of the 1950s. Charles Berkely chews scenery in a way only mid-century leading men could and the film is better for it. Roxanne Selden is luminous.

Lavish if creaky

by matinee_archive

Like all biblical-era epics of the era, it would benefit from being twenty minutes shorter and fifteen percent less stately. Still, the harbor-of-Tyre sequence is genuinely spectacular.

Hasn't aged perfectly

by modernist_picks

The casting choices and pacing are products of their time and stay there. The set design, however, is still breathtaking. Watch it for the visuals and forgive the rest.

They don't make them like this

by epic_devotee

I will defend the three-hour biblical-era Hollywood epic until I die. This is one of the prouder examples. The battle outside the gates is some of the finest large-scale staging of the decade.

A long Sunday afternoon

by casual_classics

Settle in with a sandwich. It's exactly what it looks like and it does what it does pretty well. Could lose twenty-five minutes and improve. Donovan Boyd is having the time of his life.
